This is a a wonderfully moving piece, and you’re totally right — in time we will know why this happened, but there is meaning to be gained from it from all perspectives in the meantime.

I also agree with you about this:

“If you have good fortune or are trying to do something, in Britain it’s: Why you?

In America, it’s: Why not you?”

I just don’t understand this 😜 I’m a Brit spending more time in the US, and I certainly don’t miss this doom and gloom attitude from the U.K.!

Thank you! Yes, the contrast between the British and American attitude to other people's success/happiness/efforts is really disheartening (if you are a Brit.) Honestly, I wish I had moved to the USA much sooner, perhaps I would be further ahead by now!

Wow. In a fog of dismay, anger, and rage, you cut through it all with hope, love, and - dare I say - reason. Thank you for writing the post I needed to read, and for reminding me of what a magical place this country we call home is.

Thank you! Yes, it's easy to forget with all the political fury and chaos. All those happy and unforgettable childhood memories contributed to my deep love for this country.

Great essay. You used the perspectives of time and distance to remind us that we need to play the cards we're dealt and that hope is a better strategy than fear while waiting to see what unfolds.

Thank you, David. I truly believe everything happens for a reason, even if it does not make sense now. Perspective is key.

Shackleton is the man. You're right: it's our choice whether we want to live in fear or not. I'm not a big fan of hope, but I'll settle with getting on with life and doing what I can to improve things.

Thank you for your interesting perspective comparing two different worlds. I often identified with Little Orphan Annie and focused on the sun coming out tomorrow. Hopefully, that has just happened.
